5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent memoir….

I must say, this is one of the most tightly constructed, brilliantly written memoirs that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. It’s shocking, her ordeal(s) are shocking, but the author is so eloquent and matter-of-fact about what’s she’d suffered through that as a reader, I found I could relate and empathize without feeling beaten up by the suffering.
At best, the author was beaten up by her experience but never defeated. She still managed to see the good in everyone, regardless of how much trauma they’d introduced to her life. Lewis puts her character flaws on display here, admitting to being stubborn and willful, but also demonstrates, using her own life as an example, that God is and we are never too far removed from his grace and mercy.

I finished the book in one day !
This was a really great read. Her personal story was both reverting and heart warming.
Her honesty, resilience and drive as a woman, is a story that is motivational and inspirational.
Read, read her story.

This writer takes the reader on a trip through time from her childhood to the perils of young adulthood to adulthood, while sharing vivid recollections of colorful characters and images of scary situations that defy sanity. This is a “don’t want it to end” book…a WOW…and a real enjoyable read. I enjoyed the ease with which the writer brings the reader into her world at every stage of her development. Fascinating and a five star rating from me.

Sometimes I feel personally grateful to a writer for the story she has told because it gives me insight into my own life, vastly different though it might be from the author’s. Lewis’s childhood was stolen from her. She was subjected to traumas of the worst kind. At thirteen, she turned to drugs. Much later in her life the painful memories of her childhood surfaced, and she slipped into a darkness so deep that she reached out to God for guidance. Through her faith, she gained the strength to confront hard issues, change her life, and forgive. This has not been quick or easy for her; it has been lifelong. Now, in her sixties, she claims, “I’m here to tell you, God does keep his promise. If we open our hearts to Him, he will heal them.” My heart opened to Lewis, and I suspect other readers’ hearts will too.

The author Melanie E. Lewis in her well-written debut memoir is an excellent narrator. Ms. Lewis chronicles events from her life journey in such a way that the reader is pulled in by the level of style, voice, and content in her writing.
Slipping into Darkness, Blinded by the Light: Seeing Beyond Me, describes events in the author’s life that have the potential to mirror those of the reader. Ms. Lewis’ evolution is amplified with resolute faith, sentience of self-love, and redemption of forgiveness. Qualities worth aspiring towards!

I thoroughly enjoyed this riveting inspirational book that sheds the light on some of the extreme difficulties impacting some of our young teenagers, and adults. The author, who had to cross many difficult bridges at a very young age to reach a successful point in her life, proves to us what the power of faith, courage and the willingness to make positive changes can do! This excellent book, in my opinion, would make a huge impact on so many as a made for TV movie! The author opens her heart and soul in this book to benefit all of us…
